How to network part II

Step 2 of 3, when you get to the event

The first impression you make is vital

Psyche yourself up on the way there. Tell yourself you are a successful professional who knows what you are talking about and is not afraid to demonstrate your expertise. Believe in who you are and what you do. This will instantly change the way you hold and present yourself. Don’t forget to smile!

Who to approach

When you arrive at a conference, head to the stands around the edges with fewer people. Often they are far more willing/eager to talk to you and will appreciate you coming over. Also you will be able to engage in a 1-1 conversation without having to fight others for attention. At a drinks party, gauge the dynamics of the room. Never 'do a Bridget Jones' and sidle up to a large group of people having a conversation and try to pretend to be part of the conversation - this will just make you look desperate. Instead, look for smaller groups or people at the side by themselves. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation at the bar or when pouring a cup of coffee.

When talking to people

Always be yourself - a seasoned networker will be able to spot a fake from miles away. Don’t make the mistake of forgetting someone’s name and crucially, the floor can’t hear you, eye contact is a must. Ask open ended questions to avoid awkward silences. Never script your spiel with regards to your company ethos or what you do. However, don't be nervous to talk about what you or your company is good at – the tone you’re looking for is proud without being boastful. Be prepared to back up whatever you claim with tangible results. Prepare for the unexpected, if you ever find yourself taken aback by a question, do not splutter! Count to three before saying anything to allow you to gather your thoughts. Finally, don't be afraid of rejection, there will always be people who are just not interested in what you have to say. Don’t take it personally - this is not a reflection of your approach!
